The Cardiothoracic APP is a member of an integrated team of providers committed to top level, patient - focused care. This is achieved through effective communication, accountability of performance, and uncompromising professionalism.
This position serves adult cardiothoracic surgical patients in partnership and under supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeons. The position encompasses:
• First assisting in the operating room
• Endoscopic saphenous vein harvest, radial artery harvest
• Night and weekend call as scheduled by the CT surgeons
• Inpatient- rounds, D/C process which includes D/C summary, history & physicals, consultations
• Outpatient- clinic/office evaluations
• Coordination of careEDUCATION:
Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant degree required.EXPERIENCE:
Surgical experience related to cardiothoracic surgeryLICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Valid North Carolina License to practice
Valid board certification through NCCPA , ANCC or AANP
Healthcare Provider CPR
ACLSESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Accurate and timely medical record completion - EMR entries are time consuming but proper documentation is a necessity for optimal patient care. Meaningful, accurate notes are the basis of each patient's plan of care following surgery. Accurate discharge documentation is especially important for a successful, safe transition from the hospital.
Coordination of patient care - The APP and CT surgeon work together to provide optimal postop care to every patient. The importance of effective communication of the patients needs to the CT surgeon is vital. The APP works throughout the hospital stay to prepare the patients for discharge through patient and family education, emotional support and carefully completed discharge prescriptions and appointments. Anticipation of arranging home health services as needed is equally as important.
Effective interpersonal communication skills, professionalism - The APP always follows patient first approach which requires effective communication to all levels of staff and families. A professional demeanor is expected at all times.
Inpatient and Outpatient Minor Procedures - Refer to the medical Staff Privileging forms for complete list of minor procedures to be performed by the APP's.
Inpatient evaluation and inpatient hospital rounds - The APP will complete daily evaluations of all postop CT surgical patients and enter appropriate orders (medications, labs, and imaging) to optimize the patient's clinical progress. The documentation of the daily patient visit will be focused but complete, covering the inpatient clinical issues in a clear, concise format. New patient consultations will be completed by the APP at the request of the CT surgeon.
Office/Clinic Evaluation - The APP is available to assist the CT surgeon with caring for clinic patients as needed. Some patients requiring hospital admission from the clinic will need orders as well as history/physical documentation.
Surgical Assisting - The APP requires technical skills and clinical judgment to serve as an effective first assistant to the CT Surgeon. The APP also demonstrates proficiency to independently harvest saphenous vein and/or arterial conduit using endoscopic technique. The post-operative orders will be accurately entered by the APP.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
