The Health Physicist position reports directly to the Director of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety/Radiation Safety Officer and assists in the development, implementation, coordination, evaluation and continuous improvement of the radiation and laser safety programs. Responsibilities will include general surveillance of overall activities and areas in which radioactive materials/radiation sources and laser equipment are used, supporting compliance with rules and regulations, authorized users and research projects approval as specified by the Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Committee, consultation on radiation protection with department radiation safety liaisons, determination of need and evaluation of personnel monitoring, and implementation of instructional programs on safe procedures in the use of radiation sources.EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, health physics, industrial hygiene, radiological health, physics, or related science field.
Preferred: Master's degree or higher in environmental science, health physics, industrial hygiene, radiological health, physics, or related science field.EXPERIENCE:
Required: Experience in health and safety regulatory compliance. Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards (TJC, DHSR, NFPA, OSHA, EPA, NRC, NC Radiation Protection Section) required for hazardous waste management.
Preferred: Experience in regulatory compliance environment with (TJC, DHSR, NFPA, OSHA, EPA, NRC, NC Radiation Protection Section) LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Required: Completed a formal hospital-based safety training programs such as radiation safety, hazardous materials management, environmental or radiological monitoring, or a safety program certificate of completion including to but not limited to fire safety, emergency response, and chemical/bloodborne handling.
Preferred: Certification in a related field such as National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (RPPT), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP). Completion of any recognized radiation safety-related course. RCRA /DOT training with record of completion. 40-hour HAZWOPER course and/or hazardous material management training with record of completion.
